Baseball Falls in Non-Conference Play to Nationally-Ranked TCNJ

EWING, N.J. (March. 29, 2016) – The Widener baseball team opened the scoring against nationally ranked The College of New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon, but they quickly fell behind in the non-conference contest. The Blue and Gold would eventually drop the game, 13-2. 
 
The Pride fall to 11-7, while the Lions, who are ranked #20 according to the latest D3Baseball.com poll, improve to 14-1.
 
Freshman Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top half of the second inning. The designated hitter knocked in junior Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) on the sacrifice fly to center field.
 
TCNJ would score seven unanswered run in the next two innings. Patrick Anderson would knock home John Rizzi and Ryan Fearon as he tripled to right center field in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Christian would add to the lead with a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning.
 
Anderson would close out the seven unanswered runs with a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
 
DeBellis would cut into the lead by the Lions as he scored in the seventh inning on an RBI single to right field by Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.). The freshman finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with one run batted in and a run scored.
 
Elfreth was 1-for-4 from the plate with one run batted in and a walk. Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J) ended the game 3-for-4 from the plate.
 
Barnett, who added a stolen base, was 1-for-3 from the plate.
 
Lefty Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) received the loss on the mound after allowing seven runs, five hits and four walks in four innings of work on the mound.
 
Widener will return to action on Friday as they host Alvernia at 3:30 p.m. in a contest between the top two teams on the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth side.
