Offense Drives Baseball to Victory Over Cross-Town Rival Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. (March. 22, 2016) - The Widener baseball team received hits from eight of the nine starters as they recorded an 11-4 victory over Swarthmore at Clothier Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Widener improves to 9-5, while Swarthmore falls to 14-4 on the season.

The Pride opened up the game with four runs on five hits. Junior Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) led the Blue and Gold off with a single to left field. The third baseman would later score on a single through the left side by Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.).

Sophomore Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) would add to the lead as he reached on a fielder's choice. The first baseman knocked in Barnett for the RBI as Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) advanced to second on an error by Nico Aldaco.

Widener would strike for four more runs in the third inning. Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) hit home DeBellis on an RBI double down the right field line. The freshman, who advanced to third on a wild pitch, would score on a single by Elfreth.

Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) reached first base on an infield single back to the pitcher. After a double steal that advanced McDonough to second, Elfreth would score on the same play as Swarthmore's Steven Matos-Torres over threw the second baseman.

McDonough would score on a ground-rule double by Barnett.

Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) would sit down the Swarthmore offense in order for the first two innings. The lefty would allow his first hit of the game to Charles Levitt with two outs in the bottom half of the third inning.

Guarino earned the victory on the mound after allowing four hits, four runs and fanned five in six innings of work on the mound.

Lowery finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate with four runs batted in.

Widener combined for 19 hits and ten runs batted in. Barnett was 3-for-5 from the dish with two runs batted in and one run scored. The center fielder, DeBellis, D'Alessandro and Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) each recorded a double in the victory.

Widener will be back in action on Thursday as they take on Arcadia at Erny Field in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action at 3:30 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
