Baseball Falls Short to Arcadia in First Conference Loss

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (March. 24, 2016) – The Widener baseball fell short to Arcadia as they dropped their first Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth game of the season, 6-5, at Erny Field on Thursday afternoon.
 
The Pride fall to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in MAC Commonwealth action, while the Knights improve to 11-6-1 and 4-0 in conference play.
 
Sophomore Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) gave the Blue and Gold the advantage with two sacrifice flies to left field. The first baseman opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as he knocked in Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) on a sacrifice fly to left field.
 
Lowery would later give Widener a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly out to left field, scoring Barnett once again.
 
Arcadia would tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run by Justin Chasmar.
 
After a regaining the lead on a sacrifice fly by Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.), the Pride would add another run on an RBI single up the middle by Barnett. Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) crossed the plate on the sacrifice fly by McDonough, while Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) scored on the Barnett single.
 
Arcadia would score two runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning to win the MAC Commonwealth game. Jordan Draube knocked the game winning hit to center field, as Nick Todero scored the winning run.
 
Barnett finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored and an run batted in. The junior added a walk in the conference game. Lowery finished 0-for-2 from the plate with two runs batted in.
 
Elfreth led the Pride with three hits, and recorded a run scored and a run batted in.
 
Widener will be action on Saturday as they host Arcadia in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at 12 p.m. in Chester, Pa.
