Pitching Leads Way for Season Sweep Over Lebanon Valley

CHESTER, Pa. (March 19, 2016) - The pitching staff led the way as the Widener baseball team earned the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth sweep over Lebanon Valley on Saturday.

The Pride won game one with a score of 3-0, while they battled it out for a 4-1 victory. Widener improves to 8-5 and 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth action, while the Dutchmen fall to 5-9 and 0-3 in conference play. The Widener pitching staff would allow 11 hits in the double header.

Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the complete game shutout in game one. He improved to 3-1 on the season after allowing six hits, walking one and fanning two. The sophomore righty was given a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning when junior Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) knocked home Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) on a two-out single to left field.

Healey kept the inning alive with a two-out single up the middle. The junior would step up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the next inning, and deliver two run single through the right side. The two-RBI single, which scored Cory Snyder (Kintnersville, Pa.) and Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) from second base, would give Widener a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.

Lafferty would only face three batters in the sixth inning. After a single by Marshal Kiessling, Brett Fundell would hit into a double play that would go around the horn. The sophomore hurler would allow one hit in the final frame.

In game two, the Blue and Gold would allow the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a single off the bat of Zac Edwards. Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) would get the Pride started with a single to right center in the fifth inning. D'Alessandro would advance the junior catcher on the very next at-bat with a double down the right field line.

McDonough would give Widener the lead with a two-run double down the right field line. The junior outfielder would score on a single to right field by Healey.

The Pride would add an insurance run as Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) would score on two consecutive wild pitches. Lowery got only base with a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Senior Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) would earn the victory on the mound. He allowed five hits and one run for his first victory of the season. The lefty walked two and struck out a pair in the MAC Commonwealth contest. Junior Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) would record the save after an inning of work on the mound. He would fan a pair in a one-two-three inning.

Widener will be back in action on Tuesday as they take the short trip down the road to take on Swarthmore at 3:30 p.m.
