Baseball Drops High-Scoring Contest to Penn State Behrend

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 10, 2016) – The Widener University baseball team dropped a high-scoring contest to Penn State Behrend, 23-11, on Thursday in Fort Pierce, Fla.
 
After falling down 2-0 early in the first inning, the Pride answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) started the game off with a double to right center field. The third baseman would score on the very next play as Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) would double him home.
 
McDonough, who advanced to third on a throwing error by the Lions' Brian Bohman, would score on a double down the right field line by Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.). The designated hitter would steal third base on the next pitch, putting the leading runner 90-feet away.
 
He would score as Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) reached on an error by the second baseman, Scott Sada.
 
Two batters later, Barnett would steal second and score on a double to left field by Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.). The freshman would later score to give the Pride a 5-2 lead at the end of the first inning.
 
Widener would increase their by adding two in the second before Penn State Behrend tied the game up in the fourth inning. McDonough led the bottom of the fourth inning off with a walk. After stealing second base, the right fielder scored on an RBI double to right field by Healey. He would later score with Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) on a single by Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.).  
 
Both teams scored at least one run in all of the innings, except for the eighth, where the bats were held silent with only one hit combined.
 
Enos finished the game 2-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored. Healey and Eflreth each finished 2-for-5 from the plate with two doubles apiece. Healey notched two runs batted in and two runs scored for the Blue and Gold.
 
Widener will be back in action on Friday as they take on Wilkes at 9:30 a.m. in their final game in Fort Pierce, Fla.
