Ninth Inning Rally Not Enough for Baseball Against Dickinson

ASTON, Pa. (Feb. 28, 2016) - The Widener baseball team scored four runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning, but was unable to secure the victory as they fell to Dickinson, 8-7, at the Maplezone Sports Village on Sunday.

The Pride fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Red Devils improve to 4-0.

Junior Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) led off the inning with a walk and would later advance to second on a single by centerfielder Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.).

Bases loaded with no out in the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) reached on a fielder's choice to knock in McDonough. While Barnett advanced to third, Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) was out at second base on the play.

Barnett would score a batter later as John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) notched an RBI single to center field to cut into the Red Devils 8-5 lead.

McDonough scored in the first inning when Healey reached base on a throwing error by Dickinson's Robbie Thompson from third base. The right fielder finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with three runs scored and two walks. He was two-for-two on stolen base attempts in the game.

Healey, who made some fantastic plays in the field, reached base three times. The second baseman finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and one walk. Barnett added two hits and one run scored in five at-bats.

Freshman Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) was 2-for-5 from the plate, with both hits forcing tough plays for the outfielders.

Donovan Davis (Wallingford, Pa.) allowed five hits and four runs in four innings of work. He walked two and fanned two for the loss. Freshman Bryson Turner (Mertztown, Pa.) allowed two hits in two innings of scoreless work on the mound in his debut. The Pride allowed 13 hits, struck out five and walked four as a staff.

The Pride will be back in action on March 5th as they take on Immaculata in a doubleheader in Fort Pierce, Fla. The game twin bill is slated to start at 9:30 a.m.
