Petrongolo's Walk-Off Leads Baseball to Victory in Game One; Sweep Ursinus

ASTON, Pa. (Feb. 27, 2016) – Sophomore John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) set the Widener baseball team into frenzy as he hit a walk-off home run in game one of a doubleheader against Ursinus on Saturday at the Maplezone Sports Village.
 
With a full count and no outs in the bottom of the seventh, the first baseman gave the Pride a 2-1 victory over the Bears on Saturday. He hit the ball over the right field fence, just over 307 feet away from the plate. Petrongolo homer in the last inning was the only hit for the sophomore in game one.
 
Junior Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) led the Blue and Gold with two hits, as he was two-of-two from the plate. The third baseman was hit by a pitch in the during the season opener.
 
Shortstop Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) added a run batted in for the Pride. The junior knocked in Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) to tie the game at one in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Senior Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) earned the victory on the hill. He allowed four hits and one run in seven innings of work.
 
In game two, the Blue and Gold scored four runs in the top half of the fourth inning. Elfreth was able to get the scoring started with a double to left field. He knocked in freshman Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) and junior Cory Snyder (Kintersville, Pa.)
 
A few batters later, Healey knocked home Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) and Elfreth to give the Pride a 5-1 lead. Widener would later add two runs in the seventh for 7-2 advantage.
 
Elfreth finished 2-for-4 from the plate, with a triple and a double. Healey added two hits and two runs batted in for the victory.
 
Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) received the victory on the hill after six innings of five hit baseball. He allowed two runs and walked one for the win. Sophomore Elliot Snyder (Mountain Top, Pa) recorded a scoreless inning of work out of the bullpen.
 
Widener improves to 2-0, while Ursinus falls to 0-2.  The Pride will be back in action on Sunday at the Maplezone Sports Village as they take on Dickinson in non-conference play.
