GLENSIDE, Pa. (Feb. 16, 2016) – Senior
Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, N.J.) registered her 11th double-double of the season and sophomore
Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) scored in twin figures, but it wasn't enough, as the Widener University women's basketball team fell to Arcadia by an 81-70 decision in overtime on Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.
Two early Widener turnovers resulted in Imani Alston and Valerie Dimuro connecting for four quick Arcadia points over the first minute of action. Dimuro then drove in for another layup to give the Knights an 8-2 advantage. Widener shook off the sluggish start and embarked on a 7-0 run to go ahead, but the Knights came back and ended the quarter ahead by a 21-17 score.
The teams continued to battle and went back-and-forth exchanging the lead throughout the second quarter. Widener, however, gained the upper hand as senior
Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, N.J.) dished out four assists in a span of 6:43 to help put the visitors up 32-30 at the recess.
The Pride added to their lead and embarked on a 13-4 run at the start of the third quarter, beginning with a Wylie jumper that was set up by senior
Sarah Engman (Havertown, Pa.) on their first possession of the frame. Senior
Nikki Sutliff (Sweet Valley, Pa.) followed with a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to make it 37-32, and sophomore
Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.) flew inside for a layup to create a 54-41 score through 30 minutes of action.
With Widener appearing to be in the driver's seat, Arcadia stormed back in the fourth and slashed the deficit down to one at the midway point when Dimuro scored off another feed from Alston to force the Pride to take a timeout. Crenny then sank a layup to give the Knights their first lead since the second quarter at 57-56.
Widener, however, did not back down and Ferrucci immediately answered on the other end to put the Pride ahead with 3:49 left and set up a wild finish. Even though the Knights regained the lead at 61-58, sophomore
Julia Venturelli (Bridgewater, N.J.) knotted the score three times down the stretch and Ferrucci made a free throw in the waning seconds to eventually force overtime.
In the extra frame, both teams failed to score on their first two possessions until Dimuro hit a lefty layup to put the Knights in control. The Pride attempted to mount a comeback with Wylie at the forefront, but the hosts were able hold on to their lead. Crenny made it a four-point game at 70-66 by sinking a layup and then teamed up with Alston and Olivia Roseman to convert free throws down the stretch to allow Arcadia to produce the 11-point win.
Wylie finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way for Widener. Petri added 10 points while making her first career start, and Ferrucci dished out a game-high 11 assists to add to her school-record total in the category. Venturelli contributed 12 points off the bench.
Arcadia (10-14, MAC Commonwealth 5-10) was paced by Crenny's explosive double-double performance. She finished the game with 28 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Dimuro registered 20 points and nine boards, while Roseman ended the game with 11 points to go along with five swipes and four helpers.
Widener (12-12, MAC Commonwealth 5-10) will conclude its 2015-16 campaign when it hosts Hood on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1:00 p.m. The senior class consisting of Engman, Ferrucci, Sutliff and Wylie will be recognized prior to the contest.
