CHESTER, Pa. (Dec. 13, 2016) - The Widener University women's basketball team was dealt a 93-73 setback against Rowan on Tuesday evening at the Schwartz Center.
Rowan (8-2) controlled the game from start to finish and never trailed in the contest. Valerie Garofalo dialed up from long range just six seconds into the game, and the margin grew to 11 when Alexis Kriley sank a free throw to make it 21-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Widener attempted to come back in the second and sliced the deficit down to seven on a trifecta by freshman
Angelica Borja (Somerville, N.J.), but the Profs responded by ending the half on a going on a 24-13 run. Anyssa Szymczyk closed out the frame with six straight points to give the visitors a 47-29 advantage at recess and more than enough insurance to earn their eighth victory of the young season.
Reserve Anyssa Sanchez led all scorers by contributing 23 points for Rowan, which got 54 points from its bench and forced the Pride's three point guards to commit a combined 16 turnovers. She shot 9-of-12 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from long range, and 3-of-5 at the stripe. Summer Crilley was among three players to net 10 points and also finished with seven boards as well as four steals.
Borja was a bright spot offensively for Widener by registering a career-high 15 points. She also shot 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Freshman
Devan Rimmer (Perkasie, Pa.) added 17 points, which included going a perfect 11-of-11 at the line, while also notching five assists and three steals. Classmate
Kylie Herman (Shillington, Pa.) recorded eight points in 10 minutes of action and set a career high with three steals.
Widener (3-6) will regroup and trek to Eckerd College in Florida for a pair of games over the weekend. The Pride will first face Lawrence College on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.
