ANNVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2016) – Senior captain
Steve Gozur (Hatfield, Pa.) recorded a team-leading seven tackles and was among five different players to reach paydirt as the Widener University football team earned a convincing 34-6 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday afternoon in front of a Homecoming Weekend crowd at Arnold Field.
With the victory, Widener (4-1, MAC 4-0) remained unbeaten in Middle Atlantic Conference action and has set up a showdown for first place in the standings with nationally-ranked Stevenson, which it will host during its Homecoming Weekend next Saturday. Both programs will enter the game with identical 4-0 league records and are the only undefeated teams remaining in MAC play.
Gozur, a linebacker, kickstarted the scoring barrage for the Pride when he intercepted a pass from Tyler Cottle and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown at the 8:46 mark of the first quarter. With the defense in the process of holding the Dutchmen to just 67 yards of passing offense, Widener then scored two touchdowns on the ground in the second quarter. Junior
Montrell Hicks-Taylor (Newark,Del.) and freshman
Chris Randle (Lindenwood, N.J.) each sprinted to the end zone to give the visitors a commanding 21-0 advantage at the recess.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Pride went to the air to score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Senior
Alex Krivda (Sellersville, Pa.) found sophomores
Donte Harrell (Downingtown, Pa.) and
Collin Wilson (Hainesport, N.J.) for 15 and 23-yard catches, respectively, to cap a streak of 34 unanswered points and provide more than enough insurance for the Pride to come away with their fourth straight victory.
Widener's Krivda completed 18 of his 29 passing attempts for 269 yards and had five different targets catch at least three of his tosses. Harrell rushed for more than 100 yards for the third time in four games and racked up 120, including a long of 37, and senior
Blaine Price (Jefferson, Md.) led the Pride with 67 receiving yards.
Gozur paced a Widener defense which yielded just 182 yards of total offense. He had seven tackles, an interception he returned for a touchdown and a sack. Junior
Casey Kerschner (Adamstown, Pa.) had four tackles, a sack and a forced fumble, while
Tyrone Bundy (Camden, N.J.) finished with four tackles and recovered a fumble.
Lebanon Valley (1-5, MAC 1-4), which avoided being blanked in front of its own Homecoming Weekend crowd by scoring a touchdown with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation, was offensively led by Brendon Irving. The running back recorded 73 yards on 25 carries. Travis Saylor caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Tim Pirrone to provide the only scoring for the Dutchmen.
Widener will next face Stevenson in what will be a pivotal Middle Atlantic Conference game on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. during Homecoming Weekend.
