FREDERICK, Md. (Oct. 29, 2016) – The Widener University women's soccer team earned a 3-2 victory over Hood on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas Athletic Field in the final Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth match of the season. The Pride scored three times in the first half and never looked back.
The Pride got on the scoreboard early in the 18th minute when sophomore
Shea Scannell (Linwood, N.J.) put one in the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Shortly afterwards, sophomore Alyssa Dioniso (Philadelphia, Pa.) took on one of Hood's defenders to get a shot off and capitalize on the opportunity to double the Pride advantage. Scannell then pulled through for Widener by scoring another insurance marker in the 28th minute to put the Pride up 3-0 at the half.
Two goals were scored by Hood in the second frame. However, it was not enough to put them ahead and the Pride would outshoot the Blazers, 22-12, to pull away with the win.
Freshman
Jenna Keating (Havertown, Pa.) earned three saves to pick up the victory for Widener. Hood's Rachel Knoebell turned away eight shots in the losing effort.
Widener (4-11-2, MAC Commonwealth 2-6) is slated to return 21 letterwinners and nine starters next season.
