Field Hockey Concludes Season With 2-1 Triumph Over Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. (Oct. 27, 2016) – Freshman Sam Scoma (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored twice as the Widener University field hockey team rallied to earn a 2-1 road victory over Arcadia on Thursday evening at Easton Field. The Pride tallied a goal in each half to end their 2016 campaign on a high note.

Arcadia (6-13, MAC Commonwealth 4-3) started the scoring in the 14th minute when Gabby Sedares lifted a shot past Pride senior goalkeeper Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) after receiving a pass on a penalty corner from Isabelle Houser. The visitors, however, had an answer before the break to even the score. Freshman Lexie Eberly (Lebanon, Pa.) unleashed a shot that was blocked by a Knight defender, and Scoma was in the right place to pot the rebound in the 21st minute.

Even though the Knights had a 7-4 shot advantage in the second half, the Pride took greater advantage of their opportunities and got the go-ahead goal they needed in the 46th minute. Scoma scored her second goal of the match and third consecutive marker for the team by tipping in an attempt taken by sophomore defender Sarah Quintus (Drexel Hill, Pa.) from the top of the circle off a penalty corner. Ninos then came through by turning away four more shots to help the Pride escape with the victory.

A two-year regular starter, Widener's Ninos made five stops between the pipes to earn her second straight victory in her final game as a collegian. Quintus also added two defensive saves in addition to setting up the game-winning marker. Brittany Hodson of Arcadia redirected five shots in the setback.

Widener (8-8, 3-4), which concluded the fall by winning three of its last five games, is slated to return 16 letterwinners and seven starters next season.
