Field Hockey Drops Conference Contest to Alvernia

Chester, Pa. (Oct. 19, 2016) - The Widener University field hockey team dropped its final home game of the season to nationally-ranked Alvernia by a 4-1 score on Wednesday evening at the Edith R. Dixon field.

The first half was evenly played with Widener outshooting the Crusaders 7-6. The Pride held Alvernia (16-0, MAC Commonwealth 5-0) to an almost scoreless half until Malory McCoy capitalized off an assist coming from Margaret Wentzel late in the 34th minute of the frame. The teams went into the recess with the Crusader's clinging to a 1-0 lead.

Alexis Krall found the back of the cage in the 51st minute to double the lead for Crusaders, but The Pride came back strong and attempted to rally. Just seven minutes later senior Alyssa Buckley (Flourtown, Pa.) slipped the ball past Rebecca Broscious to slice the deficit in half. Andrea Zimmerman and Krall, however, added insurance tallies in the 62nd and 65th minutes, respectively, to close out the scoring.

Alvernia's Broscious tallied five total saves, while The Pride's Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) turned away six shots in the losing effort.

Widener (6-8, MAC Commonwealth 1-4) resumes conference play when it visits Stevenson on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
