Volleyball Splits at MAC Crossover; Barbieri & Dorman Set Records

ANNVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2016) – Sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) and senior captain Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) each set a single-match school record as the Widener University volleyball team split against its competition at a MAC Crossover hosted by Lebanon Valley on Saturday. The Pride defeated Misericordia in four sets and also fell to FDU-Florham in five.

FDU-Florham 3, Widener 2 (25-22, 21-25, 26-28, 27-25, 12-15)
Widener opened the day with a back-and-fourth battle against FDU-Florham in which four of the five sets were decided by three points or less.

Despite the setback, Dorman and Barbieri set single-match school records for kills and assists. Dorman smashed 34 kills on 85 swings while also finishing the contest with seven digs, two service aces and a .341 hitting percentage. Barbieri contributed 57 assists along with four kills and five digs during the marathon.

Chrissy Murrin held the program standard for kills in a match with 29, which she registered against Keuka on Oct. 9, 2004. Barbieri, meanwhile, eclipsed the previous record mark of 56 assists which was initially established by Becky Rohrbaugh on Sept. 16, 2006 at Stockton and matched by Jamie Ballew at Elizabethtown on Oct. 15, 2008.

Another solid contributor in the match was sophomore Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.), who finished with a team-leading six blocks along with five kills. Senior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) added 25 digs.

Widener 3, Misericordia 1 (25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 25-16)
After a tough start to the day, Widener rebounded by registering a four-set victory over Misericordia to finish the weekend on a high note. The Pride were once again led by Barbieri and Dorman. Barbieri just missed a triple-double by contributing 37 assists and nine kills along with a season-best eight aces, while Dorman ended with 15 kills and seven digs. Freshman Ashley McAfee (Abington, Pa.) sparked the defense by racking up a career-high 17 digs.

Widener (8-11) will play its next four matches at the Schwartz Center beginning on Monday, Oct. 3 when it hosts Moravian. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
