Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nicholson Leads Charge for Men's Basketball in Double OT Victory Against Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 16, 2016) – The Widener men's basketball team snapped a three game losing streak as they defeated Messiah in double overtime, 78-74, on Saturday.

The Pride improve to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action, while the Falcons fall to 4-12 and 1-6 in conference action.

Senior David Nicholson (Odenton, Md.) was fouled while attempting a game-tying three-pointer with just under one second remaining in regulation. The forward's shot from long distance was no good but he was able to send the game into overtime with making all three shots from the free-throw line.

Messiah trailed by three with 20-seconds left in the first overtime session, as BJ McHenry knocked down the long range shot to send the game into a second overtime frame. In the second extra session, the Pride took a two-point lead with 30 seconds left. After a missed shot by McHenry, the Falcons fouled Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.), where the sophomore gave Widener a four point lead after knocking both free throws down.

Sambo led all scorers as he recorded 26 points on 11 of 17 shooting from the field. The sophomore guard added 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the year.

Nicholson finished the game with 11 points, one assist and one rebound for the Blue and Gold. Junior Kendall Green (Mount Laurel, N.J.) added a double-double for Widener with 12 points on three-of-seven shooting and ten rebounds.

The Pride recorded 19 points off of 19 Messiah turnovers. Widener was outrebounded in the MAC Commonwealth game 52-43, but added 32 points from inside the paint. The double overtime game recorded six ties, and 15 lead changes.

Widener will be back in action on Monday as they host Drew in non-conference action at 7:00 p.m.
