Volleyball Storms Back From Two Sets Down to Defeat Lycoming on the Road

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) had 17 kills and junior captain Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) added a double-double of the assists-digs variety as the Widener University volleyball team stormed back from two sets down to defeat Lycoming by a 3-2 decision on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Lamade Gym. Set scores were 17-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16 and 15-10.

After dropping the first two sets in which they never held a lead, the Pride found themselves in a 2-0 hole in the third frame. But after a service error was committed by Catherine Burger, Widener earned its first lead of the entire match when Barbieri set up Dorman for a kill which made it 4-3. The visitors built up an 18-11 lead and held on for a 25-23 set victory to extend the match on another kill by Dorman off a pass from Barbieri.

In the fourth set, Widener once again battled back against the Warriors after trailing 2-0 and 3-1 in the early going. The Pride, however, rattled off seven unanswered points to establish control by capitalizing on multiple Warrior attack errors and having freshmen Kelsey Lee (Chesapeake, Va.) and Dorman team up for a block. Freshman Natalie Winn (San Marcos, Calif.) put the set away with a kill off a feed from Barbieri.

The fifth and deciding set started off like the third and fourth frames with the hosts jumping out to a 2-0 advantage. But with the momentum on Widener's side, the Pride scored four straight points and never trailed the rest of the way. Freshman Kierston Forney (Manassas, Va.) made it 14-10 with a kill, and Taylor Whitman committed an attacking error on the other end to complete the rally.

Barbieri recorded a double-double with 43 assists and 12 digs, while Dorman had 17 kills on 39 swings and also filled up the stat sheet with seven kills and five blocks to lead the way for Widener. Lee added six blocks, and Winn and Forney contributed 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

Lycoming (8-5, MAC 1-1) was paced by Whitman, who led five players with double-digit kills by recording 15. Burger added a game-high 52 assists, while Lauren Fink had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Widener (9-6, MACC 1-1), which has won five of its last six games, will have the weekend off and return to action when it hosts Hood on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
