SWARTHMORE, Pa. (Sept. 2, 2015) – Junior defender Dana Adamson (Warrington, Pa.) scored the eventual game-winner for the Widener field hockey team as the Pride clawed back to a 3-2 victory over neighboring Swarthmore on Wednesday afternoon at Clothier Field.
The Garnet's Audrey Allen sent home her own rebound in the ninth minute of play for the lone goal of the first half. The second half was a different story with both sides combining for four goals in a 6:30 minute span.
Senior midfielder Ashley Aires (Bayville, N.J.) jumpstarted the scoring in the latter stanza off of a corner in the 52nd minute. Sophomore Eliza Newlin (Lewisburg, Pa.) inserted the ball to classmate Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) who dished it off to Aires for the game-tying score. Just over a minute later, freshman forward Kelly Rodgers (Oaklyn, N.J.) sank her first collegiate tally off a feed from Aires to give the Pride the 2-1 advantage.
The lead would only last 3:24 minutes as Ursula Monoghan came away with a shot after a scrum in front of the goal. But the Blue and Gold came right back as Adamson found the back of the net off a rebound just 48 seconds later. That would prove to be the game winner as the Garnet were unable to get a shot on goal following the Monoghan tally.
Junior netminder Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) earned the win in goal as she registered five saves in her 70 minutes of play. Her counterpart Ainsley Parrish turned aside seven shots while allowing three goals.
Aires led the way with three points (1g,1a) while Adamson and Rodgers each netted a score and Newlin and Herr dished out assists for the Pride.
Widener is back in action for its home opener on Friday, Sept. 4. The Pride hosts Immaculata for a 7 p.m. match-up at Edith R. Dixon Field.
