Volleyball Rallies for 3-1 Win Over Bryn Mawr

CHESTER, Pa. - Freshman Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) recorded her fifth double-double and junior Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) added 43 assists as the Widener University volleyball team rallied to post a 3-1 victory over Bryn Mawr on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at the Schwartz Center. The Pride won by set scores of 24-26, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-14.

The first set was a nip-and-tuck battle between the schools and featured 10 ties and four lead changes. In addition, neither side led by more than three points during the frame. Freshman Kelsey Lee (Chesapeake, Va.) created the 10th deadlock at 24s by finishing a pass from Barbieri, but Owl senior veteran Rachel Ofili teamed up with junior Lauren Shue for a block and registered a kill on the ensuing play to give the visitors a 26-24 victory and the early advantage.

Bryn Mawr (3-6) continued its momentum into the second set and built up a 16-10 advantage by getting a kill from senior Sarah Gates. But Widener fought back and rattled off seven unanswered, which was highlighted and capped by Dorman and Barbieri connecting for four straight points. Sophomore Lauren Daly (Aston, Pa.) gave the Pride a 25-20 set victory with a kill on the final play.

After winning the next set to seize the advantage, Widener took advantage of poor setting and attacking by the Owls and broke and used a 7-0 run in the fourth frame to establish control the rest of the way. The Pride, which got three kills from Dorman in the set, forced the Owls to hit at an -.040 clip with just four kills against five errors on 25 swings. An attacking error by Megan Kilmer on match point produced the 25-14 outcome in favor of the Pride.

Dorman paced Widener with a career-high 24 kills to go along with 13 digs. Barbieri contributed 43 helpers, junior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) added 18 digs and three aces and freshmen Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) and Kierston Forney (Manassas, Va.) finished with seven kills apiece.

Bryn Mawr was led by Noemi Moreno and Ofili in the losing effort. The senior duo finished with nine and eight kills, respectively. Zoe Holman had 28 assists and Allie Nagelski posted 19 digs.

Widener (5-5), which has won three of its last four matches, will compete at the Knights Invitational hosted by Neumann University over the weekend and begin play against Catholic on Friday, Sept. 18 at 4:00 p.m.
