ITHACA, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2015) – The freshman duo of Nicole Dorman (E. Norriton, Pa.) and Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) combined for 18 kills and a .525 hitting percentage to lead the Widener volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Cazenovia on Friday night at the Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College.
The Pride (3-3) took the sets by scores of 25-18, 25-22, and closed out the match decidedly with a third set score of 25-15.
The Blue and Gold opened the first set with the first three points and eventually extended its advantage to 12-4. After that point, Cazenovia (1-4) was never able to get closer than three points from Widener's lead, including at 21-18. But the Pride took advantage of three Wildcats' attack errors and a kill by Kalinock to seal the 25-18 victory.
The Wildcats came out firing in the second set, including a six-point run after holding a 4-3 lead to extend their advantage to 10-3. The final three points of the run came via service aces by Jerica Holland. The Pride battled back scoring seven of nine points to pull within three at 14-11. The comeback was helped by three kills off the hand of Kalinock in the middle. With the set looking like it was leaning towards the Wildcats' advantage at 20-14, Widener scored 11 of the final 13 points with eight of the points coming off of Cazenovia errors.
The final set was all Pride as they put together nine-consecutive points in the middle of the set to help them to a 25-15 win capped off by a Wildcat attack error.
Widener finished the match with a .373 hitting percentage, while holding Cazenovia to a mere .067 percentage. The Pride made just four errors on the night and knocked down 35 kills. Dorman led the way with 10 kills, while Kalinock added eight. Dorman also led her squad with nine digs.
