Baseball Knocks Out Messiah, Stevenson; Advance to Second Straight Championship Game

YORK, Pa. (May 1, 2015) – The Widener baseball team knocked out two Commonwealth opponents on Friday to advance to the conference championship game. Game One on Friday morning saw the Pride record a 13-5 victory over Messiah, while in the nightcap they battled to an 8-6 victory.

In Game One, freshman first baseman Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single to the pitcher. Senior designated hitter Michael Rytelewski  (Brick, N.J.) scored on the base knock by the freshman.

Two straight RBI walks by sophomores Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) and Nicholas Enos  (Williamstown, N.J.) help widen the lead for the Blue and Gold in the sixth.

Sophomore Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) added a bases clearing double to give Widener a 6-0 advantage in the top half of the sixth.

Sophomore Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) earned the victory on the mound for the Pride. He allowed two runs, eight hits, walked one and fanned five in six-plus innings of work.

In the nightcap, senior left fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) notched an RBI single in the top of the first inning to score sophomore Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.).

Scherer finished the game 2-for-5 from the plate with the two runs scored.

Freshman John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) notched an RBI double to left center field in the top of the fifth. Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) scored on the first baseman's first of three hits in the game. Petrongolo added an RBI single in the top of the ninth to give Widener an 8-6 advantage. He finished 3-for-5 from the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.

Barnett, the sophomore right fielder, was 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored.

Scherer, Petrongolo, Barnett, and Healey each recorded a double for the Blue and Gold.

Freshman hurler Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the victory on the mound. He allowed one hit, no runs and struck out one in 2.2 innings of work.

Widener will compete in their second straight Commonwealth Conference Championship game on Saturday at 12 p.m. They will take on top-seeded Alvernia at Santander Stadium in York, Pa.

The Pride fell to the Crusaders, 4-2, in the opening game of the tournament on Thursday afternoon. Only one run has decided three of the four games in which the two schools have met this season. Widener and Alvernia met in the 2014 Commonwealth Championship, and the Pride prevailed 3-2 last May.
