McDonough, Guarino Lead Baseball to Victory Over #13 Misericordia, 5-3

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 8, 2015) – The Widener baseball team defeated nationally-ranked Misericordia, 5-3 on Wednesdasy afternoon with the help of two young guns.
 
The Pride improve to 10-10, while the #13-ranked Cougars drop to 15-4.
 
Sophomore Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) reached base four times and freshman Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) earned his first collegiate victory on the mound.
 
McDonough was 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored and one run batted. On the bases, the center fielder stole three bases on three attempts. The sophomore reached base safely two other times via a hit by pitch and a walk.
 
The freshman hurler allowed five hits and two runs in six innings of work. Guarino walked two and fanned one on the way to his first collegiate victory. Both of the runs allowed by the lefty were unearned.
 
Seniors Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) and Paul Shepherd (Secane, Pa.) and sophomore catcher Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) each added two hits in the victory over the Cougars.
 
Scherer opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with touching home on a wild pitch by Corey Lee.
 
Senior Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) earned his first save of the season with two innings of work out of the bullpen. The righty allowed two hits, one run and struck out three in his third career save.
 
Sophomore Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) knocked in two runs on single in the bottom of the third. The short stop finished 1-for-3 from the plate.
 
The Widener baseball team will be back in action on Friday as they host Albright in Commonwealth action at 3:30 pm.
