Baseball Suffers Commonwealth Setback Against Messiah, 10-4

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Apr. 24, 2015) – The Widener baseball team suffered a setback in Commonwealth action as they fell to Messiah, 10-4, on Friday afternoon at Starry Field.
 
The Pride fell to 20-13, and 12-7 in Commonwealth play, while the Falcons improved to 15-16 and 11-8 in league action.
 
The Blue and Gold found themselves in an early deficit as they fell behind the Falcons, 2-0 in the first inning.   Freshman Matthew Guarino (Blackwood, N.J.) cut into the lead with an RBI ground out in the top of the second inning. The first baseman scored senior Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) when he grounded out to the second baseman.
 
The freshman left handed bat cut closer into the Falcons lead with a single in the top of the fourth inning. An error by the left fielder allowed senior Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) to score an unearned run on the play.
 
Guarino finished the game 1-for-4 from the plate with an RBI.
 
Scherer, the senior left fielder, notched a perfect 2-for-2 game from the plate. He added two runs scored and two walks.
 
The Pride were outhit 14-5 in the Commonwealth series opener. Rytelewski added one run scored and an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the eighth inning.
 
Widener will close out the league schedule with a doubleheader against Messiah on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. Prior to Game One, the Widener University Athletic Department will honor the seniors participating in their final regular season series in Chester, Pa.
