Baseball Falters in Commonwealth Battle to Messiah; Clinch Commonwealth Tournament Berth

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 25, 2015) – The Widener baseball team was able to clinch a spot in the Commonwealth Conference tournament, but was unable to come away with a win on Senior Day. The Pride dropped both games of the doubleheader to Messiah, 4-2 and 15-7.

Widener drops to 20-15 overall, and 12-9 in league play, while the Falcons improve to 17-16 and 13-8.

In Game One, the Pride opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by freshman Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.). The base knock scored sophomore second baseman Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.).

Guarino finished the game 1-for-3 from the plate with an RBI.

Healey was 2-for-4 with one run scored in his tenth start of the season. The sophomore's second hit of the game was a double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Pride runners on second and third.

Sophomore Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) and Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa) each added two hits in the loss.

Five Widener batters were hit by a Messiah pitcher in the first game.

Junior lefty Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) suffered the complete game loss. He allowed four runs, three walks and fanned five in seven innings of work.

In Game Two, a barrage of hits from both teams started early with an RBI double by senior left fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.). Classmate Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) scored on the two-base hit by Scherer.

Scherer finished the game 1-for-4 from the plate. He knocked in one run and threw Zach Brubaker out at the plate in the top of the third inning. Brubaker tried to score from second base on a single through the left side.

Rytelewski finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in against the Falcons. He notched an RBI single in two consecutive at-bats for the Pride.

Widener and Messiah combined for 28 hits and 22 runs in Game Two of the doubleheader. Only one error occurred in the seven inning game.

The Pride honored their four graduating seniors prior to the Game One. Scherer, Everett, Ryetelewski and Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) all participated in their final regular season series at Widener University.

As the Commonwealth schedule came to a close on Saturday, Widener locked up the number four seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference Tournament in York, Pa. The Pride will take on No. 1 seed Alvernia on Thursday at Santander Stadium. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
