Baseball Battles Back to Earn Non-Conference Victory Over Immaculata, 14-12

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 21, 2015) – The Widener baseball team earned another non-conference victory as they defeated Immaculata, 14-12, in a seesaw battle on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Pride improved to 20-12, while the Mighty Macs fell to 16-9. The game, which lasted just under four hours in length, saw the non-conference foes combine for 26 runs and 29 hits. Widener scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the victory.
 
Senior Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) just missed hitting grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning. The short stop cut into the lead held by the Mighty Macs with a two-run double off the top of the right field fence.
 
Just two innings later, the senior notched another double off the top of the fence in right field scoring Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.). Rytelewski finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. All three of his hits in the victory were doubles.
 
Scherer added a double for the Pride. He finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. The left fielder also added aw walk and a stolen base.
 
Sophomore Eliott Snyder (Mountain Top, Pa.) notched his first collegiate hit with an infield single to the Immaculata third baseman. The second baseman finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI, two stolen bases and two runs scored. His first collegiate RBI came on a walk in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
 
Center fielder Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) finished with two hits and two RBIs in four at-bats. The sophomore added his 22nd stolen base of the year and a double. McDonough currently leads the team with 26 runs batted in and 12 doubles.
 
Junior lefty Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) earned the win on the mound with just over an inning of work. The hurler allowed one hit, two runs, two walks and struck out two for his fourth victory of the season. Senior Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) earned his third save of the season with two strikeouts, no runs and no walks in one inning of work.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Keystone in non-conference play at 3:30 p.m.
 
Prior to the game, the Blue and Gold will honor Dr. James T. Harris for his dedication and service to Widener University. President Harris will throw out a ceremonial first pitch before the game. In addition, it will be dollar dog day at the park for Widener students.
