Baseball Splits Commonwealth Doubleheader with Lebanon Valley; 6-8, 8-1

ANNVILLE, Pa. (Apr. 19, 2015) – The Widener baseball team earned a split decision in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Lebanon Valley on Sunday afternoon at McGill Field.
 
In Game One, the Pride fell to the Dutchmen 8-6. However, Widener defeated Lebanon Valley in Game Two 8-1.
 
The Pride improved their record to 19-12 and 12-6 in league play, while the Dutchmen fell to 10-19 and 5-13.
 
Game One saw sophomore Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) continue his impressive weekend as he finished the game 2-for-4 with one double. The shortstop now has four doubles in four games played, with three of them coming in Game One of the doubleheader against Hood on Saturday.
 
Elfreth opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) knocked him in on a sacrifice fly to right field.
 
Sophomore Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) finished 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. The right fielder cut the Dutchmen lead in half with an RBI single through the side in the top of the second inning. He scored senior second baseman Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) on the play.
 
Lebanon Valley's win in Game One snapped a seven game winning streak by Widener.
 
In Game Two, freshman right fielder Joseph Addvensky (Milford, Pa.) was 3-for-4 from the dish with three runs batted in.
 
The right-handed bat knocked in his first RBI of the game on a single through the right side. Rytelewski scored on the play
 
McDonough finished Game Two 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored and a walk. The sophomore scored in the top of the first inning on a single by senior Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.). McDonough recorded a two-out double to left center field prior to scoring on the single by the senior left fielder.
 
Freshman hurler Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) improved to 2-0 on the mound with a complete game. The lefty allowed one run on six hits and five strikeouts for the complete game victory.
 
The Blue and Gold outhit the Dutchmen 13 to 6 in the nightcap.  Scherer, John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) and Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) each added two hits in the game.
 
The Pride scored a run in the first six innings of the seven-inning Commonwealth Conference game.
 
Widener will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Immaculata in non-conference play. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
