Baseball Stays Hot In Commonwealth Sweep Over Hood

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 18, 2015) – The Widener baseball team earned the season sweep over Hood as they improved their winning streak to seven straight games on Saturday.
 
In Game One the Pride defeated the Blazers 4-3. Widener fought back in Game Two to earn an 8-4 victory for the sweep.
 
Sophomore third baseman Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) was a perfect 3-for-3 in the first game. He scored once and knocked in two, including the winning runs in the bottom half of the second inning.
 
All three of the sophomore's hits in the game were doubles, with two of them to lead off an inning.
 
Senior Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) earned his third victory of the season. The righty allowed three runs, nine hits, walked two and fanned five in six plus innings. He now has an ERA of 2.51 on the season. Sophomore lefty Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) earned his second save of the season.
 
Game Two saw the Pride battled back with a three run sixth inning. Elfreth was 1-for-2 from the plate with two runs scored and one walk.
 
Sophomore right fielder Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) finished the second game 2-for-3 from the plate with one run scored.
 
Left fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) recorded two hits, an RBI and two runs scored in the series finale. The senior improved his batting average to .371 and added tenth stolen bases of the season.
 
Sophomore Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) was 2-for-4 from the dish with an RBI. The catcher knocked in a run on a single up the middle in the bottom of the first inning.
 
Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) recorded two stolen bases in the game. The sophomore center fielder is a perfect 20-for-20 on the season on stolen bases attempted.  He finished the game 1-for-3 from the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
 
Junior hurler Kevin Scisorek (Hillsborough, N.J.) earned the victory for the Pride. He improved his record to 2-2 on the season with a 2.45 ERA.
 
Widener will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to take on Lebanon Valley in Grantham, Pa. in a pivotal Commonwealth series. First pitch for game one of the double-header is set for 1:00 p.m.
