Baseball Defeats Hood in Fifth Straight Victory

FREDERICK, Md.  (Apr. 17, 2015) – The Widener baseball team earned their fifth straight victory as they defeated Hood, 5-2, in Commonwealth action Friday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium.
 
The Pride improved to 16-11 on the season and 9-5 in league play, while the Blazers drop to 8-20 and 1-15 in Commonwealth play.
 
Sophomore Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J) was 3-for-4 from the plate with one run scored. The shortstop notched his first home run of the season. He recorded the only run for Widener in the top half of the second inning with a solo home run down the left field line. The solo shot was the first home run of the career for Enos.
 
Junior catcher Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) opened the scoring for the Pride with an RBI walk in the first inning to score sophomore Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.).
 
Freshman designated hitter John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) finished the game 2-for-4 from the dish with one run scored. Both hits recorded by Petrongolo were doubles. He improved his batting average to .421 in 38 at-bats.
 
The freshman scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth when the pitcher threw the ball away on a single back to the pitcher by Enos.
 
Sophomore right fielder Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) added two hits in the victory. He notched his eighth stolen base and is 8-for-8 on attempts this season.
 
Freshman first baseman Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) was 1-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and a double.
 
Junior pitcher Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) allowed four hits, five walks, one run and stuck out four in seven innings of work. The lefty improves to 3-1 on the season.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Saturday as they host Hood in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
