Softball Sweeps Past Conference-Foe Albright; 10-5, 7-2

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 15, 2015) – The Widener softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of league-rival Albright on Wednesday afternoon at the Widener Softball Field.  The Pride took the matinee 10-5, and secured the nightcap by a score of 7-2.

The home squad posted three runs in each of the first three innings of the opener.  In each of the first two frames, the three runs came via one hit and two errors including a two-RBI double by senior first baseman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, Pa.).

In the third inning, the Pride scored as freshman second baseman Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) doubled in sophomore left fielder Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, N.Y.) and later scored on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by sophomore third baseman Angela Hood (Mullica Twp., N.J.).

The Lions were able to claw back with five runs in the fifth inning, as designated player Nikki Russo capped off the scoring with a bases-clearing double to right center.  But the Pride added another in the bottom of the sixth, clinching the 10-5 victory.

Sophomore hurler Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) improved to 9-1 in the circle as she surrendered five runs (four earned) on nine hits and seven walks while fanning a career-high 11 Lions.

Junior catcher Taylor Church (Glen Mills, Pa.) was the lone Widener batter to register a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

In Game Two, Albright struck first as pitcher Sammi O'Connor drilled a two-run homer to dead center in the opening frame.

The blue and gold remained quiet until erupting for six runs in the third inning on five hits and two-straight suicide squeeze plays.  DelRomano knocked home the final two tallies of the inning on a double to right center.

Another run crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth for Widener as DelRomano tripled to left field, and Church followed with a double to left field.

Sophomore Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) gave up just two runs (one earned) over the complete-game on the rubber to improve to 7-3.  She also finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.  DelRomano added a 2-for-3 showing with two RBI and a run scored.

Next up for Widener is a single game at Swarthmore on Thursday, Apr. 16 starting at 4:30 p.m.
