Baseball Battles Back to Earn Commonwealth Series Victory Over Albright

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 13, 2015) – The Widener baseball team battled Commonwealth Conference foe Albright on Monday afternoon to steal the season series. The Pride defeated the Lions 10-6.
 
Widener improved to 14-11 and 8-5 in conference play, while Albright fell to 11-10-1 and 7-8 in league games.
 
Third baseman Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) knocked in the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The sophomore recorded an RBI infield single to second base, scoring freshman John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.). Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) also scored on the play when Daniel Louviaux threw the ball into the dirt of the pitcher covering.
 
Elfreth finished the game 3-for-5 with one run scored and an RBI.
 
Sophomore Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) knocked in the winning run with a single through left side to score senior Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.).
 
Rytelewski was 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs, including an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The senior second baseman knocked in Petrongolo on a single up the middle to help give Widener a 10-6 ninth inning lead.
 
Petrongolo finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. The freshman first baseman opened the scoring with a three-RBI single to right center field in the bottom of the third inning.
 
Junior Kevin Scisorek (Hillsborough, N.J.) earned the victory as he allowed two hits, no runs and fanned three in two plus innings of work.
 
Senior Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) extended his hit streak to nine games. He has five multi-hit games in the nine game stretch. The left fielder finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to St. Davids, Pa. to take on Eastern in non-conference action. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
