Alkins Leads Softball to Commonwealth Conference Sweep Over Hood

FREDERICK, Md. (Apr. 12, 2015) – The Widener softball team earned a Commonwealth Conference sweep over Hood on Sunday afternoon at the Hood Softball Field.
 
Widener improves to 15-4 and 8-2 in the conference, while Hood drops to 6-18 overall and 3-7 in Commonwealth play.
 
In Game One, the Pride defeated the Blazers 4-0. Later in Game Two, Widener earned a 10-1 victory in six innings over Hood.
 
Junior Alie Alkins (Aston, Pa.) was 2-for-4 from the plate with one run scored. The shortstop added an RBI single down the left field line to score sophomore Angela Hood (Mullica Township, N.J.) in the top of the seventh inning. The junior infielder added a stolen base for the Pride.
 
Sophomore pitcher Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) allowed two hits and fanned ten in her eight victory for Widener in the circle.
 
Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) singled up to middle to score Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) in the top of the sixth inning. The freshman each finished the game with one hit apiece.
 
In Game Two, Alkins was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. The junior knocked in Hood on a home run in the top of the fourth inning to give the Pride a 7-0 lead.
 
Widener opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with an RBI ground out by junior catcher Taylor Church (Glen Mills, Pa.). The bunt drove in sophomore leftfielder Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, N.Y.) and move DelRomano over to third base. Church notched a double for the Pride.
 
DelRomano finished Game Two 1-for-2 from the plate with one run scored and sacrifice hit.
 
Sophomore pitcher Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate and allowed one hit in four innings of work in the circle. The righty walked one and fanned one Hood batter.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Albright in Commonwealth play at 4 pm.
