Baseball Outduels Arcadia In Pivotal Commonwealth Conference Sweep

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Apr. 12, 2015) – The Widener baseball team earned a pivotal Commonwealth Conference sweep over Arcadia on Sunday afternoon at the Erny Field.
 
The Pride defeated the Knights 4-3 in Game One and 6-5 in the nightcap.
 
Widener improves to 13-11 and 7-5 in the conference, while Arcadia drops to 12-9 overall and 8-6 in Commonwealth play.
 
In Game One, freshman John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) recorded his first career home run in the top of the second inning. The designated hitter notched his first collegiate home run down the right field line to cut into the lead held by the Knights.
 
The freshman finished the game 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.
 
Senior Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) recorded one hit and two runs batted in for Widener in Game One. The left fielder knocked in senior Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) and sophomore Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) to tie the game at three-apiece in the top of the sixth inning.
 
Barnett knocked in the game winning run with a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) scored on the play to give the Pride a 4-3 lead.
 
Sophomore Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) earned his first victory of the season on the mound. He allowed six hits, three runs, walked three and struck three in six plus innings of work. Senior Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) earned his second save of the season with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning on the bump.
 
In Game Two, freshman Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) earned his third victory in a Pride uniform. The righty stuck out two and allowed no runs or hits in just over inning of work.
 
Scherer was 1-for-2 from the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. The right-handed bat cut into the Knights lead with a two-run home run to left field in the top of the third inning. The left fielder also reached the base safely on two walks and added a stolen base for the Pride. The senior extended his hitting streak to eight games. 
 
Barnett was 2-for-2 from the dish with one run scored on the home run by Scherer.
 
Senior Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) recorded a two-RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh. The single by the second baseman ended up being the game-winning runs for Widener. Rytelewski finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Monday, as they will close out the series against Albright in Commonwealth Conference action at 3:30 pm in Chester, Pa.
