Baseball Drops a Pair of Games to Conference Foe Alvernia

CHESTER, Pa. (Mar. 29, 2015) – The Widener baseball team dropped a pair of Commonwealth Conference games to Alvernia on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Pride moved to 7-7 and 3-2 on the season, while the Crusaders improved to 12-7 and 5-2.
 
In the opener, Alvernia scoring the first run in the top half of the first inning with a single by Joe Iacobelli. Vinny Case came around to score on the single by Iacobelli. Case led the game off with reaching base on a fielding error in right field by freshman Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.).
 
Sophomore shortstop Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) scored Lowery on an RBI single down the leftfield line in the bottom of the fourth inning. Enos finished the game 1-for-3 with the only strikeout of the game for Widener.
 
Senior leftfielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) was 2-for-4 in Game One of the Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
 
Freshman first baseman Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth to cut into the Crusaders lead.
 
Sophomore lefty Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) was dealt the loss in a complete game for the Pride. The hurler allowed five hits, three runs and walked two while striking out one. He falls to 0-2 on the season with a 0.83 earned run average.
 
Game Two saw Scherer hit 1-for-3 from the plate with one strikeout. The senior outfielder's lone hit of the game was a double off of the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Freshman John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) recorded a loud out in the bottom of the seventh inning with a deep fly ball caught at the wall in right center field. Sophomore catcher Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) kept the Pride alive with a single down the right field line to advance sophomore Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) to third base.
 
Elfreth came around to score two pitches later when sophomore Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman.
 
Senior Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) suffered the loss with allowing seven hits and two runs in seven innings of work. The righty walked three and fanned three Alvernia batters. Barth falls to 1-3 on the season with a 2.06 earned run average.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Tuesday when they host The College of New Jersey at 3:30 p.m. in non-conference play.
