Even Scoring Attack Leads Women's Lacrosse to 20-5 Rout of Hood

CHESTER, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2015) – On Saturday, the Widener women's lacrosse team secured a 20-5 victory against Hood at the Edith R. Dixon Field.

The Pride (3-4, 1-1 CC) had nine different goal scorers on the afternoon, with freshman midfielder Kelsey Powell (Washington Twp., N.J.) and sophomore midfielder Kristen Bate (Somerdale, N.J.) leading the offensive charge with four scores apiece.  Powell also dished out three helpers for a seven-point afternoon.

Powell kick-started the scoring just 49 seconds into the contest with a feed from junior midfielder Meghan Garvey (Avon Grove, Pa.).  After an unassisted marker from sophomore attacker Jamie Hills (Ridley Park, Pa.) just 26 seconds later, Powell notched her second tally of the game to give her squad a 3-0 cushion.

Nearly seven minutes into action, Shay Braithwaite got Hood (2-5, 0-1 CC) on the board, but Widener rattled off the next four goals to take a 7-1 lead with 17 minutes left in the first half.  After the two squads each notched two goals, the home squad enjoyed a five-goal run heading into the intermission with an 11 goal lead (14-3).

The second half was more of the same as the blue and gold outscored the visitors 6-2, overwhelming the Blazers by a final score of 20-5.

Garvey finished the day with three goals and three assists, while Hills, junior attacker Morgan Scott (Cinnaminson, N.J.), and sophomore attacker Brooke Clasing (Shrewsbury, Pa.) registered two goals each.

The Pride outshot Hood 37-14, and held a slight edge in ground balls at 24-21.  Widener won 20 of 27 draw controls, and successfully completed 11-12 clear attempts.

Next up for Widener is a road match-up at conference foe Alvernia in Reading, Pa.  The game is set for Wednesday, Apr. 1 at 7 p.m.
