Santone Fans Nine as Baseball Rallies Past Alvernia, 4-3

READING, Pa. (Mar. 27, 2015) – Junior pitcher Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) went the distance as the Widener baseball team defeated Alvernia, 4-3, at Angelica Park on Friday afternoon.

The Pride improve to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in Commonwealth play, while the Crusaders fall to 10-7 and 3-2.

The lefty allowed five hits and three runs while striking out nine in the victory. Santone walked five in nine innings of work for the Pride. He improves to 1-1 on the season.

Senior Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) was 3-for-4 from the plate with one run scored. The leftfielder added two stolen bases, including an important base in the top of the fourth. He would score on a wild pitch after back-to-back walks allowed by Zach Nadolny.

Sophomore Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) kept the hopes of the Pride alive with a two-out single up the middle in the top of the ninth. Freshman pinch hitter John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) knocked in the tying run in Enos on a double to left field. Freshman Joseph Addvensky (Milford, Pa.) came on to pinch run for Petrongolo and would later score on a fielder error by Richard Ricciardi.

Sophomore second baseman Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) added a double for the Widener.

Vinny Case notched a solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning for the Crusaders. He finished 1-for-4 from the plate with two strikeouts. Kevin Becker-Menditt was dealt the loss for Alvernia.
