Baseball Suffers Setback Against Cross-Town Rival Swarthmore, 3-2

CHESTER, Pa. (Mar. 24, 2015) – The Widener baseball team opened the scoring in bottom of the first inning but the bats were held silent for the rest of the game as they fell to Swarthmore, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Garnet improve to 11-2 on the season, while the Pride fall to 6-5.
 
Senior designated hitter Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) scored the opening run in the bottom of the first when senior right fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) hit the grounder through the legs of the Swarthmore third baseman. Sophomore center fielder Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) also scored on the play to give the Pride a 2-0 advantage.
 
Rytelewski notched one hit and one walk against Swarthmore.
 
McDonough was 0-for-1 from the plate with one walk, a run scored, a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice hit. The sophomore also added a stolen base in the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman third baseman Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) was 1-fo-4 from the plate.
 
Swarthmore tied the game up in the top of the second inning with an RBI single by Ryan Burnett. The Garnet took advantage of a wild pitch by sophomore lefty Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) in the top of the seventh inning. Designated hitter Scoop Ruxin scored on the pitch thrown by McKelvy.
 
McKelvy fanned three and allowed three hits in three innings of work for the loss. Aidan Miller earned the win to improve to 3-0 and Nathan Booth finished off the game for his fourth save of the season.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Friday when they travel to take on Alvernia in Reading, Pa. at 3:30 p.m. in Commonwealth Conference action.
