UNION, N.J. (Mar. 21, 2015) – Behind a pair of hat tricks from midfielders
Kelsey Powell (Washington Twp., N.J.) and
Meghan Garvey (Avondale, Pa.), the Widener women's lacrosse team secured a 9-8 road win over Kean at the Kean Alumni Stadium in Union, N.J. Saturday night.
The Pride (2-3) kick-started the scoring in the contest with a score by junior attacker
Lindsey Brust (Pennsburg, Pa.) bookended by a pair of tallies by Powell. The Cougars (0-4) kept the game tight, as Jordan Blanda notched two-consecutive goals and Eliza Clark tied it up at 3-3 with seven minutes left in the first half.
After Blanda earned her second yellow card of the night with 3:59 in the half, the Pride struck with a man-up goal on a free position shot by sophomore attacker
Jamie Hills (Ridley Park, Pa.). Just over two minutes later, Garvey extended the Widener lead to 5-3 heading into half-time.
Garvey tacked on another for the Pride to double up the home squad's goal total with 21:03 left to play, but Kean drew back within two before Powell's free-position goal with under 19 minutes to play gave Widener its third three-goal lead of the match. Hills' second score of the day gave the Pride its largest lead at 8-4.
The Cougars managed to notch four of the final five scores including two in the final minute, but it was not enough to overtake the Pride as they secured the 9-8 victory.
Along with Powell and Garvey's hat tricks, the Pride offense had help with two notches from Hills and one from Brust.
Senior
Megan Dunn (Oxford, Pa.) registered nine saves in the cage, while Kean's Nikki Apostolopoulos turned aside 11 of the Pride's shots.
The Pride return home for their Commonwealth opener on Wednesday, Mar. 25. They will play host to Albright for a 7 p.m. match-up at Edith R. Dixon Field.
