Walk-Off Single Leads Baseball to Conference Opening Win Over Lebanon Valley, 9-8

CHESTER, Pa. (Mar. 16, 2015) – The Widener baseball team fought hard as it earned a third straight victory with a 9-8 decision over Lebanon Valley on Monday afternoon.
 
The Pride improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Conference, while the Dutchmen fall to 4-5 and 0-1 in conference play.
 
Freshman first baseman Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) knocked in the winning run with a walk-off single to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning. Freshman second baseman Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) and senior left fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) each walked to lead off the ninth. Sophomore shortstop Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Lowery and Scherer to second and third base respectively. After a walk by sophomore Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.), Guarino stepped up to the plate to hit in Lowery for the game winner.
 
Guarino finished the game 4-for-5 from the play with four runs batted in. The freshman added two runs scored, a stolen base and a spectacular play at first base in the top of the second inning. He opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to right field to score Enos.
 
Senior Paul Shepherd (Secane, Pa.) had three hits and three RBI in the victory over the Dutchmen.  The catcher recorded a two RBI single in the bottom of the fourth and another run batted in with a single to center field in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Scherer and Enos each added two hits and two runs batted in for the Pride.
 
Zach Smith tied the game up in the top of the ninth inning for Lebanon Valley with a two run single down the left field line.
 
Sophomore Nick Donovan (Aston, Pa.) earned the victory on the mound for Widener after a third of an inning on the mound. The righty allowed two walks and no runs but one hit in for the Pride. Lee Webber was handed the loss after allowing one run and one hit in two-thirds of work on the mound.
 
Head coach Mike LaRosa and his squad will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Neumann at 3:30 pm. Widener took the first game against the Knights back on March 3 in Auburndale, Fla., 8-2.
