CHESTER, Pa. (Mar. 12, 2015) – Sophomore attacker
Brooke Clasing (Shrewsbury, Pa.) led the Widener women's lacrosse team with a career-high eight points (6g, 2a) on Thursday night at Edith R. Dixon Field, but it was not enough as Cabrini earned the 20-13 victory over the Pride.
Widener (1-1) opened the scoring with unassisted goals by Clasing and junior attacker
Lindsey Brust (Pennsburg, Pa.), but the visitors (1-4) rattled off four straight to take a 4-2 lead after 10:35 minutes of play. The two squads then went score-for-score with Cabrini leading 6-4 after a Sarah Carzo tally in the 13th minute, but Clasing notched two-consecutive tallies to even the score at 6-6 with the latter coming off a feed from freshman midfielder
Kelsey Powell (Washington Twp., N.J.).
Once again, the Cavaliers enjoyed a 4-0 run over a five minute span, taking a 10-6 lead into the 27th minute, but the Pride battled back scoring the final three goals of the stanza. Powell and Clasing teamed up for Clasing's fifth notch of the half, and Clasing followed by feeding sophomore attacker
Jamie Hills (Ridley Park, Pa.) at the 1:37 and :34 marks to cut the Cavaliers to one (10-9) heading into the intermission.
The second half was a different story as the visitors overwhelmed the Pride with a 9-2 run over 28+ minutes of action. With 1:07 left in the contest, sophomore midfielder
Jamie Parent (Millville, N.J.) sent home an unassisted effort, but Cabrini's Jess Breuning answered right back just 23 seconds later with her sixth tally of the night. Battling until the end, Hills sent a
Caitlyn Mullner (Aston, Pa.) helper past the Cavalier goalie with 22 ticks left on the clock to cap off the scoring for both sides.
Clasing's six goals and two assists were both game-highs for the Pride, while Lacie Doubet and Breuning matched Clasing's total with six scores each.
Senior cageminder
Megan Dunn (Oxford, Pa.) turned aside a career-high 20 Cavalier shots, while her counterpart Megan Barlow registered just five saves in the win.
Widener held a slight edge in draw controls, 18-17, while Cabrini scooped up 23 ground balls to the Pride's 20.
Head coach
Julie La Zelle and the Pride are heading for a stretch of three road contests with the first stop in Selinsgrove, Pa. Widener will take on Susquehanna at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 14.
