Mullner Leads Women's Lacrosse to Victory Over Eastern

CHESTER, Pa. (Feb. 28, 2015) – Four-goal performances by junior midfielder Caitlyn Mullner (Aston, Pa.) and sophomore attacker Brooke Clasing (Shrewsbury, Pa.) led the Widener women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 season-opening victory over Eastern on Saturday at Edith R. Dixon Field.
 
The Pride open the season at 1-0, while Eastern drops to 0-3 on the year.

The Eagles were the first to strike as Stephanie Hogan found the back of the net in the fourth minute of action.  Mullner answered just over a minute and a half later to even the score at 1-1.  But the tie lasted less than four minutres as Eastern's Jenn McKelvie gave her team the edge with a goal in the eighth minute.

The scoring would go back-and-forth over the next 12 minutes of play with Widener taking a  5-4 lead into halftime.
 
The Pride opened the second half with an onslaught of scoring as four different players scored five unanswered goals including the final two off the stick of Clasing. Eastern answered with a four-goal spurt of their own to pull within two (10-8), but the Pride pulled away with a 4-1 run over the final eight minutes of play.

Six members of the Pride finished the contest with at least one goal with Mullner and Clasing leading the way with four apiece.  Freshman midfielder Kelsey Powell (Washington Twp., N.J.) and sophomore attacker Jamie Hills (Ridley Park, Pa.) tacked on two scores each in the win.
 
Senior goalkeeper Megan Dunn (Oxford, Pa.) turned aside seven shots for the win.
 
The Pride outshot the Eagles 33-17 in the non-conference match-up. Widener was 11-of-11 on clears, and totaled 22 shots on net.  

The Widener women's lacrosse team will be back in action on Thursday with a 4 p.m. matchup at Lynchburg in Lynchburg, Va.
