Baseball Falls to Augustana in Season Opener

FORT MEYERS, Fla. (Feb. 28, 2015) - Widener baseball opened its 2015 campaign with a 3-1 loss to Augustana at Pigott Park in Fort Meyers, Fla. on Saturday.

The Vikings jumped on the board early with a first inning RBI-single off the bat of second baseman Trace Gingerich.  They doubled their lead to 2-0 in the following frame as designated hitter Jacques Camalick crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.

The Pride's first run of the season came when sophomore left fielder Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) came home via an eighth-inning RBI single to left field by sophomore third baseman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp., N.J.).

In the bottom half of the inning, catcher John Swiderski scored on a groundout to give Augustana an insurance run.

McDonough led the Pride offense, finishing 2-for-3 and scoring his squad's lone run.

Earning the complete-game win on the mound for the Vikings was Seth Davis (2-0) as he surrendered just one run on seven hits and three walks while striking out nine.

Pitcher Robert Barth (Ambler, Pa.) registered eight innings of work for Widener. The senior allowed eight hits and two walks, while recording two strikeouts.

Widener will be back in action on Sunday as it takes on Ohio Northern in a doubleheader slated to start at 9 a.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.
