Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Ohio Northern at Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MEYERS, Fla. (March 1, 2015) - The Widener baseball team split a doubleheader with Ohio Northern on Sunday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Classic held in Fort Meyers, Fla.

With the split, the Pride moved to 1-2 on the season, while the Polar Bears opened their season at 1-1.

Widener was shutout by ONU in the opener, 1-0.  In the matchup
, junior hurler Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) went the distance, tossing seven innings for the Pride. The lefty struck out seven and allowed just three hits without surrendering a walk. Senior outfielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) went 1-for-2 at the plate with a single.

Game Two was also a tight contest as the Pride pulled out a 3-2 victory in the seven inning game.  Sophomore Donovan Davis (Wallingford, Pa.) surrendered just one hit and no walks while fanning four in his six innings of work. Sophomore outfielder Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) finished 2-for-2 at the plate, including a game-winning two-RBI triple in the top of the seventh.
  Senior Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) added a 1-for-1 performance with an RBI single in the win.

The Pride will return to action on Thursday at the Gene Cusic Classic as they take on Otterbeinat 9 a.m.
in Fort Meyers, Fla.
