Men's Soccer Takes On Arcadia in MAC Commonwealth Playoffs on Monday

CHESTER, Pa. (Nov. 1, 2015) –  The Widener men's soccer team earned their first Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth playoff spot since 2008, as they will take on No. 4 seed Arcadia in the play-in game on Monday in Glenside, Pa.
 
Widener, the No. 5 seed, finished the regular season with an 8-9-1 overall record and 4-4 in MAC Commonwealth action, while Arcadia ended the season with an 11-5-3 overall record and 4-2-2 in league play.
 
The Pride and Knights met earlier in the season on October 24th in Glenside, Pa., as Widener earned a 3-1 victory.
 
Freshman Mac Schailey (State College, Pa.) tallied the game-winning goal for the Pride. Schailey buried the ball into the left corner of the net on a shot from the top of the 18-yard mark to give the Blue and Gold a one goal advantage in the 54th minute. Senior Eric Taylor (Bensalem, Pa.) recorded two second-half goals in the victory.
 
Ryan Hammer opened the scoring for Arcadia in the ninth minute of play. The Pride outshot the Knights 21-19, including nine to seven for shots on goal. Junior David Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) notched five saves in net for the Blue and Gold.
 
Widener's last appearance in the Commonwealth tournament came in 2008, when they reached the final. The Blue and Gold earned their first conference tournament victory in school history with a 1-0 victory over Lebanon Valley on November 4th, 2008. After the semi-final victory over the Dutchmen, Widener went on to play than nationally ranked #8 Messiah in the conference title game, but fell 7-0.
 
Last season, the Pride reached the semifinal round of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference South Region against Misericordia. Widener, who appeared in the ECAC Tournament for the fifth time in program history, fell to the Cougars, 1-0 in overtime.  It was the first time since 1999, they reached the semifinals of the tournament.
 
Admission to the game is set for $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for students and children under six-years-old are free. Long-sleeved championship t-shirts will also be on sale at the gate for $15.
