Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker in Double Overtime at Neumann

Junior captain Ashley Aires (Bayville, NJ) scored the opening goal early in the second half for Widener, which was dealt a tough 2-1 double-overtime loss at Neumann in Aston, PA.

Widener (0-2) earned back-to-back penalty corners shortly into the second half. Freshman Eliza Newlin (Lewisburg, Pa) took the first corner at 46:30, with no result.

The second corner, again taken by Newlin, was stopped up top by freshman Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa), which set up for a hard shot off of the stick of Aires for a goal. While Aires scored her first goal of the year, Herr recorded her first collegiate assist in the 49th minute.

Late in the second half, senior Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) saved a shot off of the stick of the Knights Lindsay Spatola leaving a rebound out front for Alexa McIntyre. McIntyre then put home the rebound with 68:09 elapsed on the clock to tie the game for Neumann (1-2).

With countless opportunities by both teams in the first overtime, the game was sent to a second overtime for only a short time. Carolynn Bacho scored the game winning goal only 57 seconds in on a breakaway.

Karmeris recorded 13 saves and sophomore Kaelei Renzi (Mantua, NJ) led the team with four shots.

The Pride look to rebound on Saturday at Edith R. Dixon Field as they host Swarthmore at noon.
