Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Handed 5-0 Loss by Gwynedd Mercy

Widener ran into a scoring machine in Gwynedd Mercy, which netted four goals in the first half and dealt the home side a 5-0 loss at Edith R. Dixon Field.

The Griffins (3-2) came out firing in the third minute when Abigail Gabriel's shot worked its way past several players and found the back of the cage.  Katie O'Neill then got into the act in the 10th minute, deflecting Brittany Wilson's shot from up top home for a 2-0 margin.

O'Neill then got her third of the campaign in the 28th minute on another deflection, this time from Megan Senkeleski for a 3-0 contest.  Wilson reached the goal column in the 32nd minute, firing home a shot from the top of the circle off Brooke Oliver's pass for a 4-0 lead.

It capped a half in which Gwynedd Mercy owned a 9-0 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Melissa Russo, who assisted on the first goal, scored in the 44th minute on a deflected shot from Stephanie Bacho for the final.

Sophomore Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, PA) made six saves over the final 35 minutes and senior Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) had four in the opening half for Widener (2-4).

Russo and O'Neill each had four shots for the Griffins.  Kelly Kruk and Samantha Soscia each played a half and did not make a save.

Widener plays its fifth road game in the young season on Friday, when it visits Cabrini for a 4:00 pm start.
