Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight, 55-53 Over Lycoming

(box score)

Widener came through in the end to win a hard-fought battle, 55-53, over Lycoming in Commonwealth Conference play at Schwartz Center.

In a very exciting Saturday afternoon game, the winner was not decided until the final moments. Widener held a two-point advantage with eight seconds remaining when Lycoming's Nicole Calella drove the floor and attempted a layup to send the game into overtime. The ball went off the backboard, hit the rim and bounced away from the basket to secure the win for the Pride.

Widener (9-4, 4-2 CC) struggled early as Lycoming went up 21-9 with six minutes remaining in the first half. With the half coming to a close the Pride went on a 15-6 run to decrease the Warriors' lead to one point at the break.

One minute into the second half, sophomore Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) made a layup to give the Pride the lead for good. Wylie finished with a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The game remained close, but Widener held on with great free throw shooting from sophomore Nikki Sutliff (Sweet Valley, PA) and senior Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) down the stretch. "Free throws are what decided the game for us. They made 13, we made 24, that is huge in a tough game like that one," said Widener head coach Alisa Kintner. "We proved we are a very tough and physical team when we have to be."

Egee finished with a team-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and a season-high five steals.

Junior center Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) had eight rebounds, five points and one block to lead the Pride in the post.

Lycoming (6-6, 3-3) was led by Chelsea Henderson with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Julia Antonelli added 13 and eight.

In a span of eight days, Widener has won three conference matchups to improve to 4-2 in league play.

Widener looks to continue its winning streak when its travels to Alvernia on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
