Volleyball is 2-0 After Day One of Bomber Invitational

(vs. Union-NY) / (at Ithaca)

Freshmen Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, PA) and Lauren Elliott (Aston, PA) recorded season highs as Widener secured victories of 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 25-18) over Union (NY) and 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-22) over host Ithaca on day one of the Bomber Invitational.

Barbieri managed a career-best 43 assists against Union and added another 24 against Ithaca.

Also in the Ithaca match, Elliott scored a career-high six aces in the three sets. "That is the first time a player had six aces in a match since I have been coaching the team," said Widener coach Donovan Anglin. "That was great to see, especially from a freshman."

The Pride (4-3) lost the first set but swept back to claim the win over Union. Freshman Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, PA) recorded 14 kills and defensively added 18 digs. Junior Kaitlin Schnalzer (Bethlehem, PA) added another 14 kills and only suffered two hitting errors.

Senior Veronica Vizzard (Havertown PA) and junior Caitlin Horan (Morristown, NJ) contributed 12 kills apiece and sophomore Ashley Ferrill (Reading PA) led the team with 26 digs.

Vs. Ithaca, the Pride cruised as Ruditys led the team with 10 kills. Horan recorded a team-leading five blocks to go along with seven kills of her own.

Schnalzer continued her prowess at the net with nine kills and defensively adding nine digs. Junior Victoria Miller (West Chester, PA) led the Pride with 12 digs.

Widener is back in action for day two of the Bomber Invitational on Saturday against SUNY Oneonta at 11:00 am and Cazenovia at 1:15 pm.
