Field Hockey Remains Undefeated With 4-2 Win Over Neumann

(box score)

Sophomore Meghan Garvey (Avondale, PA) scores her third and fourth goals of the season as Widener defeated Neumann, 4-2, at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener (2-0) got off to a quick start when senior Devon Biglin (Ocean City, NJ) stole the ball away from a Neumann defender and fired it past the goaltender just six minutes into the first half. That goal marks the second for Biglin in the young season.

The next goal would come from Neumann during the 23rd minute. Lindsey Spatola received the pass off a penalty corner and fired the ball towards the net where teammate Jordan Hopkins was able to deflect the ball into the net.

Two minutes later the Pride regained the lead, 2-1, as junior Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) dribbled past a defender and was able to draw goalkeeper Lindsey Kasecamp out of position. Lindquist then passed the ball to her left where Garvey was waiting and smacked the ball into the goal.

Garvey was not finished yet. Ten minutes into the second half, freshman Dana Adamson (Warrington, PA) took a shot from just inside the circle and Garvey was able to deflect the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. Garvey leads the team with four goals on the season and her 18 career goals places her in a tie for 10th place in school history with Kelly Eash (2006-07).

The Pride continued their scoring streak with five minutes left. Senior Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) carried the ball from the midfield line all the way into the circle, beat two defenders and drove a straight shot past backup goalie Becca Wallace.

With three minutes left, Neumann's Jess Harrell added another goal for the Knights off a shot from the left side for the final.

Widener lead Neumann in shots, 20-6, and in penalty corners, 8-5.

Junior Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington DE) played all 70 minutes in goal for the Pride, making three saves.

Widener next travels to Swarthmore to play the Garnet on Saturday at noon.
