Field Hockey Overcome by Stevenson, 2-0, in Conference Opener

(box score)

The score remained tied going into halftime, but a pair of goals in the second half gave Stevenson a 2-0 win over Widener to open Commonwealth Conference competition at Edith R. Dixon Field.

The Pride (3-6, 0-1 CC) led in the first half with seven shots to the opponents three, but was unable to capitalize on any of their opportunities. Stevenson goalie Gabriella Brooks made five saves in the first half alone to keep Widener from taking the lead.

Freshman Dana Adamson (Warrington, PA) led the Pride with three shots all of which came off of penalty corners and sophomore Meghan Garvey (Avondale, PA) finished with two shots on the day.

The story in the second half was different as Widener was outshot 6-2 by the Mustangs.

The first Stevenson goal was scored by Alson Kagel in the 39th minute. Caitlin Dempsey made a turn-around move against a Widener defender and struck the ball towards the net where Kagel deflected the ball past freshman goaltender Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, PA), who finished with four saves.

Melissa Doering deflected the ball in the 51st minute to her teammate Allyson Moody, who tapped the ball into the right side of the goal for Stevenson (7-4, 1-0).

The Pride led in penalty corners 9-6 and shots on goal 6-5.

Widener returns to Edith R. Dixon Field on Tuesday at 7:00 pm to face off against Goucher.
