Field Hockey Scores First But in the End Falls at Delaware Valley 4-2

(box score)

Widener scored the first two goals, but was undone by a second-half comeback from Delaware Valley for a 4-2 loss in Doylestown, PA.

Freshman forward Colleen Riley (Tannersville, PA), making her first start, netted the first goal of the match in the eighth minute. Riley stole the ball away from an Aggie defender three yards away from the left post and quickly maneuvered a shot that slipped past goaltender Sandra Edwards' left foot. The goal marks Riley's first score in her collegiate career.

A minute and 14 seconds later, senior Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) scored to give the Pride a 2-0 lead. Balonis intercepted a pass from two Aggie defenders and used her speed to gain a breakaway down the center of the field. Opposing goalie, Edwards came off of the end line to kick the ball away, but Balonis dribbled past the goaltender and easily tapped the ball into the cage. Balonis is now tied for second on the team with three goals in the season.

Delaware Valley's Leah Hawthorn scored in the 16th and 21st minute to tie the game before going into halftime. The Aggies then continued that momentum and registered two more goals in the second half, one from Bree Musselman and the other by Kelsey Zook.

Junior goalie Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington DE) played all 70 minutes for the Pride (3-5) and made a season-high 10 saves.

Balonis and sophomore Meghan Garvey (Avondale, PA) led Widener with four shots a piece.

Widener returns to Edith R. Dixon Field on Saturday, when it begins Commonwealth Conference competition against Stevenson at noon.
