Volleyball Endures a Hard-Fought 3-1 Loss to Lebanon Valley

(box score)

Widener took the first set but could not maintain that momentum and suffered a 3-1 Commonwealth Conference defeat from visiting Lebanon Valley (25-17, 16-25, 19-25, 23-25) at Schwartz Center.

Widener (9-6, 1-2 CC) controlled its league foe in the first set and hardly managing a single error. In the second and third sets, the story was reversed and the Dutchmen hardly missed an attempt. In the fourth and final set, the team fought it to the very end, but the Pride fell two points short of taking the match to the fifth set.

Junior Kaitlin Schnalzer (Bethlehem, PA) recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. The 12 kills are the third most the Pride captain has had this season in a four-set match.

Fellow captain, senior Veronica Vizzard (Havertown, PA), added six kills and led the team with two blocks. Vizzard protected the net, but it was junior Victoria Miller (West Chester, PA) who held the back line with 14 digs.

Freshmen Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, PA) and Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, PA) continued as prominent players for the Pride. Ruditys managed nine kills and defensively added four digs, and Barbieri contributed 32 assists with five digs.

For the Dutchmen (9-2, 3-0), it was Greta Weidemoyer who led with 17 kills followed by Kayla Confer with 12. Kacey Musselman recorded 32 assists to match the number of assists from Barbieri.

Widener returns to the Schwartz Center on Saturday for the Widener Tri-Match. The Pride will face Cabrini at 10:00 am and Haverford at 2:00 pm.
